Can we design
independent energy?

︎︎︎Biji-Biji Initiative

How to design sustainable? Designing    awareness and educating people about
consumption, sustainability and recycling is the goal of Malay company biji-biji initiative. As I have been part of the “Energy Team”, we made installations to generate humanmade energy.
The Biji-Biji Team used energy generators built into upcycled bikes. As you can see in my abstract graphics, the company evolved the technical part from being a fixed component of the bike, to a modular energy hub.
As the bicycle generator was released from the bicycle a lot of new possibilities arised. The electronic hub
includes everything from motor to cranks in a compact cube. The energy hub enables us to redesign the usability
and comfort, empowering humanmade energy to be part of daily life. And here starts my work. The vision is to generate independent energy whil keeping people active in everyday life.
After analyzing the market and competitors, I started to find out the most important elements of the furniture to
be, the energy hub properly fixed and stabilized, a table connecting a place to source the energy and for working, and a seat.
