Can we design
growing products?

Do you know on which objects you are looking? These beautiful shots have been made from fishscales. They have been the inspiration for a project, questioning the fact, that aging products tend to break instead of growing .
Fishscales have something in common with trees. They develop annual rings. You can read the story and age of this unique fish in his scales.

Transforming the idea of growth into a product,I designed floor tiles, embracing the patterns of those fishscales. The pattern is covered under a laye of paint. While using this everyday object, passersby will slowly remove the paint. Exposing new colours. Just imagine scratching the floor while moving furniture will not bother you, contrary it will amuse you.
To create the prototypes I printed the tiles in 3D. After this I used the objects to make silicone molds. I poured concrete in the molds and let it dry. The
deepenings have been filled with paint and were seale with a white layer of paint.
How to exhibit a product that reveals it strength in time? For the exhibition with
Biotopia I decided to make an interactive installation. The visitors were allowed to give the tiles a stresstest.
With different tools, people could experience what happens to the tiles while using them in a extreme matter.
